Description
This ame glaze bowl was produced by a Mashiko ware potter using a potter’s wheel. Soft Mashiko clay mixed with sand was formed into a thin bowl, and ame glaze with beautiful light and dark hues was applied to the bowl. Mashiko ware was produced under the strong influence of the Mingei movement – Japanese folk art movement in 1920s and 1930s to advocate the beauty of functionality. A variety of thick objects with a soft atmosphere were produced under the Mingei movement, in which simple beauty was found in hand-crafted everyday objects. The Ame bowl is an evolution of Mashiko ware. It's made to be thinner, lighter and slightly smaller to adjust to modern lifestyles. The pieces have a simplicity following the Mingei movement as well as a thin and modest impression. The light and shadow of the brown glaze give it a profound expression.
