Kasama Ceramic Rice Pot

Description

When rice is cooked in an earthenware pot heated up thoroughly, the rice comes out fluffy to the core, sweet and fragrant. Because it cooks faster than in an electric rice cooker, you can shorten the cooking time. The Kasama Ceramic Rice Pot has perfect circle outline in the bottom, semicircle handle, risen deep rim and gradually thickened cross section towards the bottom in order to cook rice properly. The idea of "一 (means 1 in Kanji)"-shaped handle comes up with traditional Japanese rice cooker's wooden lid. Each pot is crafted by hand on a potter's wheel.

Before use

New earthenware pots must be seasoned before the first use to ensure durability. Due to their porous nature, ceramic items absorb liquid. Seasoning the earthenware pot fills the pores in the ceramic, preventing the pot from leaking or cracking. It also serves to combat odor transfer from the food to the ceramic. A simple and easy seasoning method is to cook porridge in the pot. The starch fills the pores in the ceramic, improving the pot's durability and creating a different texture though use.

Seasoning instructions

1. Wash the pot with water. Wipe it with a cloth and leave it upside down to air dry completely. Using the earthenware pot while the bottom is still wet may cause it to crack.
2. Fill the pot to 80% with water. Add a bowl of steamed rice.
3. Simmer on low heat for about one hour. Be careful to prevent water from boiling over the edges. After one hour, remove the pot from the fire.
4. After the pot has cooled off completely, pour out the porridge and wash the pot with water. Soaking the pot in water while it is still hot may cause it to crack.
5. Leave it upside down to air dry completely.

How to cook delicious rice

Since the earthenware pot conveys heat slowly and deeply, rice comes out fluffy and fragrant. This pot can cook up to 450g of raw rice.

1. Wash the rice and soak it in water for 30-40 minutes. Strain all the water and scoop the rice into the pot. Do not use the earthenware pot to wash or soak the rice in. Doing so may cause cracks to appear due to the absorbent quality of clay.
2. Add 200ml water per 150g raw rice and place the lid on the pot. Boil in medium heat. The amount of water depends on the type of rice or on your preference.
3. Lower the temperature when the pot begins to steam profusely.
4. After 5-7 minutes, peek into the pot to check the remaining amount of water. If large bubbles are still appearing, let it simmer on low fire for a while longer. The time depends on the amount of rice.
5. When most of the water has evaporated, turn off the fire and leave the rice to steam for another 10 minutes.
6. Mix with a ladle, making a cutting motion, and drain the remaining water. Your delicious steamed rice is ready.

If burnt rice sticks to the bottom

1. Fill the pot with 80% of water and one spoon of baking soda.
2. Mix the baking powder in the water and let it simmer on low heat for 10 minutes.
3. Let the water sit in the pot overnight. Wash the pot with water and use a sponge to remove the burned food.

Care instructions

- After use, wash the pot with a sponge with water (no detergent). Leave it upside down to dry completely in a place with good airflow.
Cracks and fungus growth may occur if the clay absorbs water.
- If you intend not to use the pot for a prolonged period of time, leave it out to air dry for one week before storing it.
- Do not use cleansers or metal sponges to clean the pot.

Warning

Do not use the earthenware pot while it is still wet. Doing so may cause cracks to appear.
- Do not suddenly cool down or soak the earthenware pot in cold water if it is still hot. Doing so may cause cracks to appear.
- Use a gas stove when cooking. Earthenware pots don't work on induction hobs.
- If your gas stove has a temperature sensor, turn the sensor off before use.
- Do not hear the pot up while empty. Doing so may cause cracks to appear.
- This pot can also be used to prepare other dishes. However, the clay may absorb the color and smell of the food.
- This pot cannot be used to cook fried food.
- This pot is not dishwasher safe.
